Roberta Olenick
Wildlife On The Prairie
Roberta Olenick was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where
she developed her strong affinity for the "prairie" and
its flora and fauna. Some twenty years ago Roberta graduated from
the University of British Columbia with an M.Sc. in animal ecology.
Subsequently, she worked as a park interpreter, a natural history
writer, a researcher, and an environmental activist with the Sierra
Legal Defence Fund and Earth Island Institute.
In 1990, Roberta rather serendipitously discovered the "camera"
as an ideal tool for indulging her life-long curiosity and expressing
her profound reverence for animals, as well as for the open, wild
landscapes. This is clearly recognized in her sensitively and carefully
crafted images. She has travelled extensively to photograph wildlife
in a variety of far-flung locations, including Antarctica, the Falkland
Islands, and most recently, the great plains of southern Canada
and northern United States.
Roberta has devoted a significant amount of her time in the last
two years photographing the animals and the landscape of Alberta,
Saskatchewan, Montana, and North and South Dakota. Many of her photographs
evoke visions of a raw, untouched wilderness before the intrusion
of civilization. A skilled wildlife photographer must earn the trust
of the subjects they photograph and at the same time have a keen
sense of the "critical moment" of exposure to best illustrate
the subject. Looking at the portfolio presented here, as with all
of her photographic images, confirms that Roberta Olenick has what
it takes to do just that! We hope you agree.
